10 Facts you never knew about Bulgaria




I know you probably all know the basics: Balkan country, part of the EU, great seaside, etc. So I am not gonna bore you with that stuff. Here are 10 fun facts you never knew about Bulgaria:

1. Bulgaria is the oldest country in Europe, which hasn’t changed its name since it was established. this was in 681 AD.

2. In Bulgaria was discovered the oldest gold treasure in the world. It dates back to 5000 BC and was discovered in Varna Necropolis.

3. Bulgaria takes third place in the list of countries with most valuable archeological sites, right after Greece and Italy.

4. Nearly one third of Bulgaria’s territory are forests. This is no surprise, since there are more than 40 mountains in Bulgaria.

5. Bulgaria is the country with the highest number of natural mineral springs in Continental Europe - more than 600. 

6. The Cyrillic Alphabet was invented in the 9th century by two Bulgarian brothers- Cyril and Methodius. With the accession of Bulgaria to the EU on 1st January 2007, the Cyrillic alphabet became the third official alphabet in the EU.

7. The first computer in the world was created by the scientist John Atanasoff. He designed it in the period 1937-1942 together with the inventor Cliffort Berry. 

8. Bulgarians shake their heads for yes and nod for no. Weird, I know.

9. Every year on 1st March, Bulgarians exchange martenitsas. These are small adornment made of red and white wool that symbolise good health and prosperity.

10. In addition to birthdays, Bulgarians also celebrate name days. These are the days, on which the saint or martyr you were named after, is honored by the church.
